Packaging Design / GRDE 432 Paperboard Packaging Alliance 2020 Student Design Challenge
This packaging course includes senior graphic designers and industrial designers and sophomore-senior packaging science students working on teams.
The Paperboard Packaging Alliance 2020 Student Design Challenge was to design a packaging toolkit for educators to be distributed by the TICCIT® (Trees into Cartons, Cartons into Trees) program and engage third through fifth graders in environmental and educational activities that highlight the renewability and sustainability of paper and paperboard packaging.
RIT's eight interdisciplinary teams used the provided TICCIT reference information as a point of departure to guide their design of three or four educational activities. These activities included game boards, cards, interactive games, outdoor activities, puzzles, journals, quizzes, and more. The toolkits will include saplings which will be planted in cartons which will biodegrade. The saplings will be cared for by the next generation of environmentalists throughout the U.S.
This challenge was made even more challenging by the arrival of the Covid 19 Pandemic in the middle of our spring semester. After working at RIT for three weeks, teams completed their submissions using online communication. This was indeed an added challenge that did not deter our students from doing their very best.
The FREARS placed second in the top three! Team Loose Leaves received an Honorable Mention and Team Treeative received a Shout-out! Congratulations to one and all!
