Kate Johnson
Contemporary poetry and the history of fables play an important role in the thesis work of Kate Johnson ’20 MFA (Fine Arts Studio). She uses the image of teeth as symbols of currency and sacrifice. Through sculpture, printmaking and installation, this body of work, titled “Token,” highlights contemporary issues and the perception of them through a fable-like lens. Material and interaction also play a role in “Token.” As the viewer walks across the wooden platform, they experience a give in the material, a give the viewer must then compensate for. The over exaggeration of steel supports creating a barrier to convey otherness or separation while staying transparent.
