Public Art
Adjunct Faculty and alumna Sarah Kinard ’18 (Fine Arts Studio) was one of several local artists commissioned to create a mural for Mercantile on Main, a new restaurant marketplace in downtown Rochester, N.Y.’s Sibley Square. Kinard used acrylic paint markers for her mural, “Tight Line,” based on a large woodcut she designed and printed.
The design is a digital collage of collected images that reference architecture, shapes, forms and patterns. Fellow Fine Arts Studio alumnus and RIT Bevier Gallery Coordinator Shane Durgee ’16 helped transfer the design and finalize the image for the public art piece.
Well-known Rochester artist Shawn Dunwoody was initially hired to create all the public art works for the Mercantile on Main mural project. But he put out a call to local artists to complete some of the murals, with Kinard’s application being selected for one of them. Dunwoody himself produced two of the murals and oversaw creation of the other six.
