The Typographic Hierarchy Series exercises introduce fundamental typographic variables and how they reveal the hierarchy of information inherent in a message.

Using one ephemeral message of 17 lines of type, the first 7 exercises are highly regimented explorations of typographic variables in isolation and then in combinations to understand how these variables affect the transmission of a message. The variables can distinguish kinds of information, reveal hierarchical emphasis (primary, secondary and tertiary information), and clarify associated information. The typographic variables are: linespace, weight, and horizontal shifting.

In the last 3 exercises, the order of the text can be changed, the variable of size is introduced, and typographic rules (lines) are explored. Attention to language, meaning and detail are emphasized.

Typography I, Exercise 10 solution

This solution is an excellent example of how effective proper use of typographic variables can be to make the message clear, accessible and engaging. This solution was also used for the thumbnail image.
