The 28th annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, held on Aug. 1, is structured as a professional research conference. Research themes included everything from fundamental microbiology to the fine arts.

RIT has received a grant from the National Science Foundation to help make artificial intelligence smarter and more inclusive. The grant creates the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site in Computational Sensing for Human-centered AI and will allow a total of 30 undergraduate students from across the country to spend 10 weeks at RIT.

Scientists have been floating designs for solar sails to propel spacecraft for decades, but a new approach being developed by an RIT professor could be the key to helping spacecraft photograph the poles of the sun for the first time.

RIT honored researchers who served as principal investigators on active awards in fiscal year 2018 at an April 11 reception. Also recognized were the 20 recipients of Seed Funding Awards and 12 new inductees in RIT’s PI Millionaires. 

A classic scenario plays out in action films ranging from Baby Driver to The Italian Job: criminals evade aerial pursuit from the authorities by seamlessly blending in with other vehicles and their surroundings. The Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) has RIT researchers utilizing hyperspectral video imaging systems that make sure it does not happen in real life.

RIT is now listed as a “high research activity institution” or “R2” under the updated Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Learning.

RIT’s sponsored research portfolio grew in fiscal year 2018, reaching a record $78 million in funding. RIT received 340 new awards and had a record 333 principal investigators associated with active research awards.
