Pregnancy Resources

Navigating pregnancy while attending college can be a challenging experience. You don't have to go through it alone.

The Student Health Center at RIT provides high quality primary health care and education to students in a caring and supportive environment. Services include pregnancy confirmation, counseling, and referrals as needed to abortion or maternity providers, as these services are not provided at the Student Health Center.

Use this page as a starting point for resources available to support you. Whether you're seeking medical care, counseling, or academic accommodations, RIT provides access to a comprehensive range of resources to help you navigate your pregnancy related decisions while continuing your education.

Abortion

There are two ways of ending a pregnancy: medication abortions and procedural abortions. Both of which are safe and common options that are available off-campus.

  • Procedural Abortions
A medical procedure performed to end a pregnancy.

  • Medication Abortions
The use of medications to end a pregnancy without a procedure.

Adoption

Adoption is the permanent and legal transfer of parental rights from a child’s biological parents to adoptive parents. There are several options when it comes to adoption, all of which can be discussed with a medical provider, but below are some of the most common types of adoption:

  • Open Adoptions
In an open adoption, the birth and adoptive parents create an agreement to remain in contact. The extent of communication varies depending on the circumstances.

  • Semi-Open Adoptions
In this form of adoption, neither the birth nor the adoptive parents have each others’ contact information. All information about the child would be shared through an adoption professional.

  • Closed Adoptions
In a closed adoption, the birth and adoptive parents remain confidential and do not have contact with each other or the child during or after the adoption.

If you believe you’re pregnant and are considering adoption, it is recommended that you schedule an appointment with a medical provider as soon as possible to begin prenatal care and to discuss the various types of adoption. Consider scheduling an appointment with the Student Health Center through the RIT Wellness Portal to discuss next steps for a referral to off campus obstetrical care.

Parenting

Deciding to raise a child is a personal and important choice. Parenting is a lifelong commitment that requires plenty of love and energy. Having a baby can be a joyous, rewarding, and also challenging experience. During pregnancy and childbirth, the body does some incredible things. Receiving care during and after pregnancy is essential for the health of you and the baby regardless of if you choose parenting or adoption. Your prenatal provider can also assist with resources and referrals to support you in care for the baby.

  • What is prenatal care?
Prenatal care is an important part of pregnancy. It’s an opportunity to have regular checkups with a medical provider throughout your pregnancy to keep both you, and the baby, healthy. If you believe you are pregnant, it is recommended that you schedule an appointment with a medical provider as soon as possible to begin prenatal care. Consider scheduling an appointment with the Student Health Center through the RIT Wellness Portal for a referral to off campus obstetrical care.
