Mechanical Workshop

The Mechanical Workshop at RIT Dubai is a well-equipped laboratory with a variety of conventional and non-conventional machine tools such as machining, grinding, casting, welding, laser cutting, and 3D printing. This laboratory offers a strong hands-on training component of the study to all undergraduate and graduate students. The laboratory also offers an interdisciplinary innovative space for both instructional and research activities. The lab also serves as a workshop for Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

The workshop encompasses practices and experiments that serve in a wide range of graduate and undergraduate courses, such as MECE 104: Engineering Design Tools; MECE-300: Intermediate Machining and Fabrication Lab; MECE 301: Engineering Application Lab; MECE 497: Multidisciplinary Senior Design I; MECE 497: Multidisciplinary Senior Design I; and other related courses.

The workshop is also utilized to support graduate students working on their Masters projects and/or theses.

Lathe Machines

A Lathe is a machine tool that rotates a workpiece about an axis of rotation to perform various operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, deformation, facing, and turning, with tools that are applied to the workpiece to create an object with symmetry about that axis.

Computerized numerically controlled, or CNC lathe machines are most commonly used because they are fast, accurate and the most advanced type of lathe. With CNC lathes, the material being worked is slowly sheared away resulting in a beautifully finished product or intricate part.

Milling Machines

CNC milling, or computer numerical control milling, is a machining process that employs computerized controls and rotating multipoint cutting tools to progressively remove material from the workpiece and produce a custom-designed part or product.

The CNC milling machine is fully equipped with advanced technology and has 5 axes for manufacturing the product. This machine can full fill the need of students and also can be used on an industrial scale. The operation performed by this machine is profile milling, end milling, face milling, etc.

CNC Lathe Machine

Operated with Computer Numerical Control (CNC) systems and provided with precise design instructions, CNC Lathes are machine tools where the material or part is clamped and rotated by the main spindle, while the cutting tool works on the material, is mounted and moved in various axis.

Laser Cutting Machine

Laser cutting is a technology that uses a laser to vaporize materials, resulting in a cut edge. While typically used for industrial manufacturing applications, is now used by schools, small businesses, and hobbyists. Laser cutting works by directing the output of a high-power laser most commonly through optics.

Boxford Vertical Machining Center

A machining center of which the spindle axis and the worktable are set vertically can perform milling, boring, drilling, tapping, thread cutting, and more operations. CNC vertical machining center is a type of Computer Numerical Control VMC that has vertically oriented spindles that approach workpiece mounted on worktable from above and equipped with tool magazine system and automatic tool changer. In CNC vertical milling center, the material to be processed will be held on the table and the cylindrical cutters oriented vertically on a spindle axis.

A Coordinate Measuring Machine

This is a device that measures the geometry of physical objects by sensing discrete points on the surface of the object with a probe.

Surface Grinder M250D

This is used to produce a smooth finish on flat surfaces. It is a widely used abrasive machining process in which a spinning wheel covered in rough particles cuts chips of metallic or non-metallic substance from a workpiece, making its face flat or smooth.

The Band Saw

It is a power saw with a long, sharp blade consisting of a continuous band of toothed metal stretched between two wheels to cut material. They are used principally in woodworking, metalworking, and lumbering, but may cut a variety of materials.

Casting Machine

It is a collection of equipment that is used to shape and form molten metal into various shapes and forms by the use of a die. This includes the furnaces, ladles, tundishes, impression devices, clamping units, dies, and gating systems.

3D Printers Additive Manufacturing Machines

This machine is specialized in making custom parts with accuracy. As the name suggests, 3D printers add material, layer-by-layer, to form a 3D object. In the RIT Dubai ME workshop, we have various brands of 3D printers at the disposal of students.
