Join us for an interactive workshop exploring the practice of visual description for museums. Visual descriptions are important aspect to providing equitable and inclusive experiences to visitors who are blind and have low-vision and provide a means for greater engagement with all visitors, in particular for digital content and experiences. As museums work to reach all audiences, accessibility and inclusion are essential toward this goal. We’ll discuss applications of visual descriptions and learn the elements and considerations for authoring through group discussion. After the workshop, we’ll have an open Ask-Me-Anything session with Ruth talking accessibility, museum inclusion, DEIA, or otherwise.
Ruth Starr (CLA, Museum Studies '16) is an interdisciplinary program manager who has worked with many museums and government organizations including the Smithsonian, the Museum of Modern Art, NASA, and the National Science Foundation. She currently leads accessibility at Clarivate, a global provider of content, analytics, and workflow solutions that fuel research, education, and publishing. She is a professor in the Graduate Program in Museum Studies at New York University and is the co-founder of Rest Energy, a nonprofit collective dedicated to furthering care in the arts and cultural sector. Ruth is a graduate of RIT’s College of Liberal Arts Program in Museum Studies and NTID’s Program in ASL-English Interpretation.
This session is open to all in the RIT community, especially those interested in developing accessible digital experiences. For interpretation, see https://myaccess.rit.edu/myAccess5/.
