Originally written as her doctoral dissertation in 1991, the book is the result of extensive field research conducted in the 1980s. It explores key aspects of Albanian traditions and worldview: kinship structures, the Kanun’s regulations of extended family life, wedding customs, the roles of women, perspectives on arranged marriages, and the education of girls. The book also examines the impact of migration on Albanian identity and the preservation of values and traditions in the Opoja region.

Dr. Reineck expressed her gratitude to Professor Arsim Canolli for inspiring and supporting this publication, and to Professor Lumnije Kadriu for her excellent translation. Above all, she acknowledges the kindness of the Albanian villagers who opened their homes and lives to her during her research.
