IEEE Explore @ RIT Kosovo Students Publish Groundbreaking Research on Sentiment Analysis

Yllka Totaj and Alma Beluli, students in the Computing and Information Technologies BS program at RIT Kosovo (A.U.K), have successfully completed an innovative research project on sentiment analysis under the supervision of Dr. Debabrata Samanta and Dr. Blerta Prevalla Etemi. Their paper has been accepted and published at the 4th International Conference on Distributed Sensing and Intelligent Systems (ICDSIS2023), held in Dubai, UAE, on December 21-22, 2023.
The research focuses on the challenges of sentiment analysis in massive news streams and Online Social Networks (OSNs) like Twitter, which do not always offer integrated sentiment analysis tools. One of the key issues in news sentiment analysis is the contrast between the objective tone required in news reporting and the subjective interpretation of the readers. With a focus on the Ukraine-Russia conflict, the team analyzed 10,009 tweets posted between January 2022 and the third week of July 2022, categorizing them as positive, negative, or neutral. The findings revealed that 37.06% of the tweets were positive, 22.90% negative, and 39.5% neutral.
This research provides crucial insights into how the public perceives significant global events, highlighting the importance of sentiment analysis in understanding public opinion during crises. The full research paper is available on IEEE Xplore and has already been indexed by Scopus.
