Job Description

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Learning (EECL) is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Principal at the Manitoba School for the Deaf within the Inclusion Support Branch. The Manitoba School for the Deaf (MSD) is an ASL milieu environment that operates a Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 bilingual/bimodal program.

The Manitoba government is committed to ensuring that all Manitoba students succeed, no matter where they live, their background or their individual circumstances. The department launched Manitoba's K to 12 Education Action Plan outlining a vision for student success and describing upcoming and future actions to advance this goal. Working in a highly collaborative environment, you will have the opportunity to lead teams in designing policy solutions to address immediate needs, as well as future-oriented system improvements.

The principal provides leadership to MSD staff on the development of programs and services for Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students enrolled at the school. They are responsible for developing and implementing programming for early years, middle years, and senior years levels, ensuring that the provincial curriculum is followed and best practices for Deaf and hard of hearing students are utilized. The principal is responsible for all the day to day management of the school which includes admissions, transportation, managing budgets, human resources, building maintenance, and aligning with operational processes set out by the government. This position works in collaboration with parents and the Deaf community and liaises with other government departments and service agencies when needed. The principal must align administrative policies and Code of Conduct with provincial standards.

Requirements

Essential:

  • Experience working as a teacher and in school administration (early years, middle years or senior years).
  • Experience and formal training with instructional teaching techniques specific to the field of Deaf and hard of hearing education and programming.
  • Experience working with students with special needs and programming for students with special needs.
  • Experience managing staff demonstrated by effective human resource practices.
  • Fluent in ASL (American Sign Language).
  • Strong written communication skills in English.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to resolve complex issues.
  • Strong political acumen with the ability to act with diplomacy and tact.
  • Knowledge of the Manitoba Curricula.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Desired:

    • CAEDHH (Canadian Association of Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing) Certification.
    • School Administrator's Certificate.
    • Experience managing an annual/operational budget.
