The MITRE Corporation is offering two internships to highly motivated engineering and/or information technology students interested in focusing on telecommunication solutions for people in the d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing community for the Summer 2023 work period (June through August). The internship provides an exciting opportunity to help develop, verify, and validate telecommunications solutions for the d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing community. Selected candidates will have the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge in MITRE’s collaborative lab environment with an emphasis on knowledge sharing and continuous professional development.
*Qualified applicants from the d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing community are highly encouraged to apply.*
Project Information: The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) MITRE National Test Lab (NTL) for the FCC’s Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) has been established to support the FCC mission of data-driven management and improvement of routine communications, and thus, quality of life for people who are d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing. The lab focuses on ongoing testing of two of the most fundamental FCC-funded community services today: Internet Protocol Captioned Telephone Service (IP CTS) and Video Relay Service (VRS). The amount and complexity of independent testing conducted by the lab is expected to evolve in parallel with the growth of its inherent capabilities. With independent verification and validation efforts, the NTL captures “snapshots” of overall system interoperability and performance observations and measurements using the same equipment and software as the user community.
Responsibilities: MITRE is seeking highly motivated candidates to support tasks that include, but are not limited to:
- Participation in technical research and development, requirements validation, and use case development in support of the FCC TRS
- Assistance with hands-on testing and research activities involving VRS solutions and products
- Work with the team to document and create long term automation testing solutions that meet the evolving needs of the lab
Ideal candidates will be pursuing an undergraduate degree in Science, Technology, Information Technologies, Business IT, or related discipline, with an interest in systems engineering, business IT development, or other similar technical disciplines. Candidates should have an introductory knowledge of one or more of the following: business processes, computer hardware and software, network standards, and scripting languages.
The applicant will also be expected to demonstrate the following:
- Sustained excellence in academic performance
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and written English, with effective writing and communication skills
- Experience in any of the following technical areas: computer hardware and software, networking, or programming
- Familiarity with standard Microsoft desktop tools
- Willingness to work in a collaborative team environment, both virtually and in-person
Candidates should be prepared to commute to MITRE’s McLean, VA Campus to complete work in person (as applicable per internship position's work location). The work will consist of both virtual and onsite activities on a weekly basis. MITRE Intern Travel Assistance may be available for candidates not local to the Washington DC / Northern Virginia metropolitan area.
