Job Description:
The Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences at Indiana University
has a non-tenure-track Lecturer position in American Sign Language (ASL)
available beginning either January 1, 2025, or August 1, 2025. This is a
10-month academic-year appointment with the possibility for additional
teaching in the summer.
Responsibilities: Teach ASL courses ranging from introductory to advanced and
develop course content and curriculum. Qualified applicants must also be
willing to engage in all aspects of the ASL program, including external
symposia and retreats. Participation in faculty service is expected. Indiana
University is a highly regarded, public research university and the
undergraduate and graduate programs of the Department of Speech, Language and
Hearing Sciences are ranked among the top in the nation. The Bloomington
campus is home to approximately 42,000 students, including about 300
undergraduate majors and 120 graduate students in speech, language and
hearing sciences.

Requirements:
Native or near-native fluency in ASL with demonstrated ability to converse
fluently in high-level professional and academic conversation. A master’s
degree in ASL teaching, linguistics, or related field is required.
Evidence of positive relationships and collegiality with Deaf and hearing
university students, staff, and colleagues. Two years of ASL teaching at the
college level is preferred. Evidence of participation in ASL/Deaf Studies and
Deaf community organizations on local, state, and national levels. Commitment
to Deaf bilingual/bicultural experience and its foundation in fundamental
human rights. We seek candidates with strong passion for ASL, ASL minor
courses such as Deaf Culture and advanced ASL classes, and a desire to be a
team player.
