Bridges Alum Lorne Involved in Field Research

“This experience of doing qualitative data collection in Tinian, Saipan, and Palau was filled with many inspiring and amazing stories. I used to think that being deaf would have many barriers, that I’d never have this opportunity of having the access to local natives’ personal stories in the remote areas. Oh boy, I was definitely wrong! They were even more open to me for several reasons, it’s mainly because I use different language and started to have a heart to heart conversation every single time. I’ve finally understood how to be fully proud of my identity as a deaf person in the system that is designed for hearing people. (This was awesome ride from Saipan to Tinian; 10 minutes flight. Tinian is part of Saipan and is usually neglected.)”  ~Lorne Farovitch, posted to FaceBook on June 27, 2017

Meeting with Program Officer at TWD

Drs. Steve Barnett, Jess Cuculick, Peter Hauser, and Program Coordinator Nikki Cherry, had the opportunity to meet with the NIGMS Bridges to the Doctorate Program Officer, Dr. Patrick Brown while at the Training, Workforce Development, and Diversity conference in Baltimore, MD, June 18-21st.

Busy Weekend for Deaf Scientists/Researchers

June 9-11 was the Association of Medical Professionals with Hearing Loss (AMPHL) conference hosted at RIT/NTID which brought together over 300 deaf and hard of hearing professionals and interpreters to campus to network and share new and relevant information with others.  With the conclusion of AMPHL on Sunday, many of the attendees headed on over to the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) for the 1st Rochester Summer Research Training Institute that ran June 11-13, hosted at the URMC.  This was an additional opportunity for deaf and hard of hearing professionals to network and learn various aspects of pursuing a research career.  Among the presenters were Dr. Carol Padden and Dr. Caroline Solomon, trailblazers in their disciplines!

Bridges Cohort 2014-2015: Lorne Farovitch

My name is Lorne Farovitch. I was born in Vancouver B.C., Canada and grew up in Arizona. My wonderful deaf parents raised me along with two hearing siblings. I went to Arizona Schools for the Deaf and Blind because my parents wanted me to have full access to learning through American Sign Language. After graduating from high school, I went to Gallaudet University and graduated with two degrees in Biology and Chemistry. I am fascinated with science. Science has many different and interesting areas that I was not sure about until I saw the Rochester Bridges to Doctorate Program.

The Bridges Program is perfect for me because it helps me narrow down to an area of science that I am most interested in. Currently, I am a graduate student in environmental science and am interested in doing research on the survival of various pathogens in surface water, sediments, and soils.

Bridges Cohort 2014-2015: Jessica Contreras

My name is Jessica Contreras. I am from Anchorage, Alaska and I have been at RIT for the past 5 years. I have worked at the Deaf Studies Laboratory as a Research Assistant during this time and obtained my bachelor’s in Clinical Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice. I am currently working on my master’s degree in Experimental Psychology. My goal is to obtain my PhD in Brain and Cognitive Sciences and become a researcher. My research interests are language and how the brain develops specifically in relation to signed languages. (L-R: G.Wink, RITchie, RIT President Destler, and J.Contreras)

Bridges Cohort 2014-2015: Madeline Beach

My name is Madeline Beach and I recently graduated from Boston University with a B.A. in Mathematics, specializing in statistics. I am currently working towards an M.S. in Applied Statistics through the Center for Quality and Applied Statistics at RIT. After earning a Masters, I hope to continue on with a PhD either in Biostatistics or Statistics with a specialization in biostatistics. I am interested in pursuing research in the field of mental health, specifically issues of quality of life and depression among the Deaf and geriatric populations.

iSLC Conference

The seventh annual inter-Science of Learning conference (iSLC) was hosted in Pittsburgh, PA with the theme of “Navigating the Future of the Science of Learning.”  This conference offered students a comfortable place to present their research to their peers—instilling professionalism, networking, and intellectual discourse from an inter-disciplinary perspective.  It served as an excellent opportunity to build one’s expertise disseminating at conferences.  This year was my second year attending the conference and I was thrilled Gina De Naples, who is a first year Bridges Scholar, was able to join as well making it her first conference experience!

Student Retreat

Bridges Year One cohort (Gloria Wink and Gina De Naples) joined Jessica Contreras to attend the Student Leadership Team Retreat at Gallaudet University.  This was an excellent opportunity for student researchers across the United States to meet and spend two days in workshops on various topics, such as ethics related to researching small populations, a simple guide to statistics, and team building exercises.
