Job Title
Financial Management Student Intern for Accounts Payable Department (Summer Internship 2014)

Work Responsibilities
DFAS provides finance and accounting services and pays all Department of Defense (DoD) military and civilian personnel, retirees and annuitants, as well as major DoD contractors and vendors. During my first week, I completed the DoD Financial Management 101 courses to learn more about DoD before I started to work. Then, I worked with my group on a project for the Accounts Payable Customer Care Center. We analyzed the causes of misrouted calls and provided recommendations so DFAS could prevent that in the future.

I also did some job shadowing to learn the various types of work and career opportunities that DFAS offers. While in the accounts payable department, my main responsibility was to perform extensive research to identify general ledger imbalances that can prevent the proper posting of invoices and receipts that are necessary for liquidation of a recorded account.

How my career relates to my degree from RIT/NTID
My degree in Business Management will help me prepare to manage in a variety of fields. I am learning how to be effective at communicating, writing and at developing solutions to complex problems. And I am acquiring the managerial skills that will allow me to work my way into leadership roles in future jobs. My major is pretty broad, and I have taken various business courses that helped me prepare for my future career area. While on co-op, I used the skills I have developed related to Business Information System Processes, Finance/Accounting, and Leadership in Organizations. Not only did my business courses contribute to my being able to work well on co-op, but also I have learned from my involvement with clubs and organizations on campus how to be a successful leader and that has added to my leadership abilities. All in all, DFAS provided a great learning experience.

There are so many opportunities out there. Take advantage of them, if you can. Life is short.
