Christine Sun Kim has been named NTID's distinguished alumnus.

Christine (CK) Sun Kim, an American artist based in Berlin, has been named this year’s Distinguished Alumnus by Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf.

Working predominantly in drawing, performance, and video, Kim's practice considers how sound operates in society, deconstructing the politics of sound, and exploring oral languages as social currency. Musical notation, written language, American Sign Language (ASL), and the use of the body are all recurring elements in her work. She further uses sound to explore her own relationship to verbal languages and her environment.

Kim has exhibited and performed internationally, including at the Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt (2021); Manchester International Festival, Manchester (2021); MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge (2020); Whitney Biennial, New York (2019); Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo (2019); Art Institute of Chicago (2018); San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2017); De Appel Arts Center, Amsterdam (2017); Berlin Biennale (2016); Shanghai Biennale (2016); MoMA PS1, New York (2015) and the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2013), among numerous others. She is represented by François Ghebaly Gallery in Los Angeles and White Space Beijing in Beijing. Kim also performed the national anthem in ASL at Super Bowl LIV in 2020.

Kim graduated from RIT in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in Applied Science & Technology.

“CK has always been a person of great talent and vision,” said Gerry Buckley, NTID president and RIT vice president and dean. “It has been a joy to watch her grow and develop into the internationally known artist we see today.”

Additional information on Kim can be found in this RIT University Communications article, and her website. A video of her performance at the Super Bowl is available.
