RIT/NTID partners with Rochester Museum & Science Center for Deaf Culture Day, Nov. 2

Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf is partnering with Rochester Museum & Science Center for Deaf Culture Days, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 2, at RMSC, 657 East Ave., Rochester. The event provides an accessible and friendly experience for deaf and hard-of-hearing people in the community.

Deaf Culture Days provides an accessible and friendly deaf and hard-of-hearing experience at the RMSC Museum & Science Center, and is a celebration of Deaf culture and STEM achievements with tabling from local deaf community organizations.

Interpreting services will be provided pro bono by students in RIT/NTID’s bachelor of science in interpreting program throughout the day as a part of this collaboration. This event provides NTID student interpreters with hands-on experience as required by their programs.

“Our Rochester Deaf community has benefitted from the wonderful programming at the RMSC,” said Gerry Buckley, NTID president and RIT vice president and dean. “Celebrating Deaf Culture Days at the RMSC allows us to celebrate this partnership with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends. We very much look forward to exploring all that the RMSC has to offer.”

Activities include:

• Meet and greets with local deaf professionals in STEM
• Hands-on experiences with ultrasound scanning provided by NTID’s Youth Programs and Deaf Hub
• Animal touch table and sensory room
• STEM-tastic Storytime with Rochester School for the Deaf

Admission is free for RMSC members and NTID and RSD faculty, staff and students; and regular admission prices for non-members.
