Headshot of Pamela Aasen

Pamela Aasen is a graduate of University of New Brunswick in Canada with undergraduate degrees in early childhood and special education and a master's degree in special education. She brings a wealth of experience professionally and as a parent leader in the deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind communities. Aasen has 25 years of experience as a special education teacher working with diverse communities in the United States, Canada, and the Dominican Republic. As the mother of two sons with usher syndrome who are current RIT/NTID students (one in business, one in mechanical engineering), she has firsthand experience navigating the challenges and triumphs of raising children with unique needs. In advocating for her own children, she has successfully led parent engagement initiatives and worked in partnership with parents to empower them to become advocates for their children, guiding them through the process of finding appropriate family-centered care and ensuring an appropriate education.

Aasen also works with several local, national, and international deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind organizations to support parents, youth, and young adults and was the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) project director for the SPAN Parent Advocacy Network from 2017 to 2022. She previously served on the board of directors of ErinoakKids, a children's treatment center in Ontario, Canada, and currently serves on national advisory committees for the Hands & Voices Family Leadership in Language & Learning (FL3) Center and the American Academy of Pediatrics EHDI Provider Education Center.

Aasen has authored several articles for Exceptional Parent Magazine, writing about everything from diagnosis and therapy needs to extracurricular activities and navigating both school and post-secondary education. In 2020, she was awarded the national EHDI Family Leadership award and has been the coordinator for the EHDI Program in the New Jersey Department of Health since 2023.
