The aim our research is to transform screening and early diagnosis of cancer by creating medical imaging agents that specifically target cancer cells. The research involves a mix of peptide, dye and organometallic chemistry combined with fluorescence, photoacoustic, MRI and PET imaging with a current focus on early detection of cancer.

Our group collaborates with the following groups within RIT. They primarily test the efficacy of our imaging agents in biological or spectroscopic test systems.

  • Confocal imaging (Dr. Evans, Gosnell SOLS)
  • Photoacoustic imaging (PAI, Dr. Naval Rao, Carlson CIS)
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI, Joseph Hornak, Carlson CIS and SCMS.

The group size ranges in size from five to ten student researchers in semesters and five to six students in summer. Over the past five years fourteen students have graduated and entered Ph.D. programs in graduate schools or employment in pharmaceutical companies or cancer research centers such as M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Two students have also had summer internships at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Institute.

Dr. Schmitthenner has taken three ASL classes at RIT and has had many DHH students in classes and looks forward to mentoring deaf students
