Dr. Irshad Altheimer is an Associate Professor at the College of Liberal Arts, teaching courses focused on the nature of criminal justice, minority studies, and applied research methods for improving criminal justice practices. He received his B.A. from Alabama State University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Washington State University. Dr. Altheimer is the Director of the Center for Public Safety Initiatives (CPSI) at RIT and actively researches community urban violence. Dr. Altheimer was awarded the W.E.B Dubois Fellowship from the National Institute of Justice in 2013, related to his project titled Enhancing Knowledge of Dispute-Related Violence. His passion for improving criminal justice practices also extends to his community, moving him to partner with the Bureau of Justice Assistance as the Co-Principal Investigator of a grant-funded project aimed at reducing gun violence in Rochester.
