Our research is focused on computational biochemistry. We create software for protein structure analysis, then use our software to explore enzyme active sites. Our current focus is moving toward computational assessment of antimicrobial resistance. My research group includes two other faculty members, Dr. Herbert J. Bernstein (mathematician, computer scientist) and Dr. Jeff Mills (analytical chemistry, structural biologist), and usually about 3-6 students. I also oversee the BASIL (Biochemistry Authentic Science Inquiry Lab) project, a team of 11 faculty members on 8 campuses who are implementing a Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) that centers on predicting protein function and verifying that computationally and in the lab.
