Junior Studio II: Cultural Design
Maggie Davis
Tradition
I chose to create a kneading board that included instructional diagrams that show how to braid a six braid challah. The board is made of maple with a chesnut oil finish. I wanted to keep the design simple and elegant. The purpose of my product is create a conversation about the traditions of Judaism, challah in particular, and help facilitate the passing of traditions from generation to generation.
All cultures have traditions that are unique and filled with history. Traditions are used to remember, to commemorate, and to teach. Throughout this project I came to understand the impact of traditions and how important they are to cultures and their longevity. I wanted to create a beautiful product that served as a tool to pass on those unique traditions in Judaism and hopefully help spread the culture and its wonderful values to anyone who is willing to learn.
