RIT students planted trees in Louisiana, revitalized farms and greenhouses in West Virginia, and repaired hiking trails in Georgia and Virginia as projects during this year’s Alternative Break.

The National Press Photographers Association, the leading voice advocating for the work of visual journalists today, has recognized the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences in the College of Art and Design with its two top student photography honors.

As many of his classmates spent spring break someplace warmer than Rochester, one RIT student stayed in town, donned a Batman costume, and provided food, water, and clothing to people in need.

Leaf Corcoran ’11 (computer science), who founded itch.io—an online marketplace for indie game developers in 2014—is one of the key organizers behind an online campaign that has raised more than $5.6 million to benefit the people of Ukraine.

The New York State Pollution Prevention Institute is collaborating with Syracuse University’s Center for Sustainable Community Solutions on a grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to assist communities and stakeholders in New York state with reducing the amount of edible food that goes to waste.  

Larry Lewis ’04 (electrical engineering technology) was honored as this year’s FIRST Robotics Finger Lakes Regional Volunteer of the Year. This is the second time he has been recognized for work with the Penfield High School team, his organization of numerous new FIRST teams across the K-12 spectrum, as well as his inspiring work throughout the pandemic.

WROC-TV features “Deaf Day of Play,” hosted by NTID and The Strong.

NTID and The Strong have partnered to celebrate Deaf Awareness Month. On Sunday, March 20, students from NTID’s Department of American Sign Language and Interpreting Education will provide ASL assistance at the museum’s admissions desk and its Skyline Climb high adventure course. And ASL tours of the Dancing Wings Butterfly Garden will take place every hour from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

RIT and the Global Health Association @ RIT are partnering with humanitarian organization InterVol in an urgent donation drive to aid the people of Ukraine affected by the Russian invasion. InterVol’s Ukraine Relief campaign is accepting donations through Thursday, March 10.

The New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) is accepting applications for the organization’s 2022-2023 Community Grants Program. Founded in 2008, the program is part of the NYSP2I’s ongoing efforts to continue improving the health and environmental quality of New York state.

Robotics teams will take flight and land at RIT on March 10-12 for the 2022 FIRST Robotics Finger Lakes Regional competition. Thirty-seven regional teams and more than 600 students, teachers, and mentors will gather to participate in the annual challenge FIRST Rapid React.
