Intersections: The RIT Podcast, Ep. 25: Not all learning does, or can, happen in a classroom. Last summer, Bolaji Thomas, professor in the College of Health Sciences and Technology, took a group of students to Nigeria to give them a firsthand look at the impact of malaria on global health. Abigail Melake, a biomedical sciences major, and Janice Fung, a biotechnology and molecular bioscience major, talk about what they learned.

Three students from the biomedical sciences program traveled with RIT Professor Bolaji Thomas to his native Nigeria to understand the impact tropical diseases such as malaria have on the population and the medical protocols used in treatment.

“Nuclear Weapons in North Korea: Deal or No Deal?”, a discussion of North Korea’s nuclear armament and the role that technology plays in improving society, will be hosted by RIT as part of its Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend.

Ifeoma Nwogu, an assistant professor of computer science, received an NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award and grant for her five-year project to study human behavior by using machine learning techniques to analyze and find patterns in the many signals that individuals display during social interactions.

Alexandria Shumway was selected to do research abroad over the summer through the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) RISE program, or German Academic Exchange Service. Through this program, the fifth-year bioinformatics and computational biology (BS) and bioinformatics (MS) student traveled to Kiel, Germany, to complete her research at the Christian-Albrecht University of Kiel.

Looking to learn more about the roots of American deaf culture, fourth-year student Grace Bradford went on a study abroad trip to France. From June 24 to July 4, the ASL/English interpretation and School of Individualized Study double major traveled with other NTID students to Paris, Reims, La Balme-les-Grottes and Lyon.

RIT President David Munson this morning welcomed back the community, saying that the university is positioned for another exciting academic year.

The agreement aims to continue and strengthen the relationship between the world’s first and largest technological college for deaf and hard-of-hearing students and the global deaf rights organization.

Cybercrime is costing the world trillions of dollars, and analysts say that there aren’t enough qualified professionals to prevent those attacks. To address this problem, RIT is creating the Global Cybersecurity Institute (GCI), aimed at meeting the demand for computing security and artificial intelligence professionals, while developing future technologies, protocols and human understanding needed to address the global cybersecurity crisis.
