More than 4,300 first-year, transfer and graduate students were expected and were greeted by more than 200 RIT student orientation leaders who helped families unload cars, put belongings in carts and wheel them to their rooms during Move-in Day today.

RIT is helping more students from nontraditional pathways get hands-on experience in scientific research early in their academic careers through a unique summer program focused on mentorship.

Under the new program, first-year students at Monroe, Finger Lakes or Genesee Community colleges can enroll to complete a bachelor’s degree from RIT. The students would attend RIT for their second year, and after completing that year, would receive their associate degree from their community college. They would then go on to finish their bachelor’s degree from RIT.

Six recently graduated motion picture science students from RIT’s College of Art and Design wove together the captivating videos for a museum exhibit at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the nonprofit cultural center located at the National Register Historic Site of the Woodstock festival in Bethel, N.Y.

Cybercrime is costing the world trillions of dollars, and analysts say that there aren’t enough qualified professionals to prevent those attacks. To address this problem, RIT is creating the Global Cybersecurity Institute (GCI), aimed at meeting the demand for computing security and artificial intelligence professionals, while developing future technologies, protocols and human understanding needed to address the global cybersecurity crisis.

Gracie’s, the largest dining facility on campus, is on schedule to reopen Aug. 12 after a $2 million renovation of its kitchen and serving areas. The renovation, which began May 1, is now in its final phase.

The Princeton Review features RIT in the just-published 2020 edition of its annual book The Best 385 Colleges, giving RIT high marks for diversity and campus life in addition to having rigorous academics and helpful professors.

RIT’s Black Awareness Coordinating Committee has been moving RIT forward for 50 years.

Intersections: The RIT Podcast, Ep. 20: Learning assistants bring a different perspective to a student’s educational experience. At RIT, the Center for Advancing STEM Teaching, Learning & Evaluation trains undergraduates to be learning assistants, and facilitate small-group or other interactions in the classroom. Dina Newman, associate professor in the Thomas H. Gosnell School of Life Sciences, and recent biology graduate Gretchen Horst talk about how the program works.

The two-week trip through the German cities of Paderborn and Frankfurt was the culmination of a spring semester course that introduced students to game design and development in Germany. For the study abroad program, students participated in an extended game jam with German students, sat in on a class about artificial intelligence in the games industry and toured three game studios.

David Pflanz ’19, Sedera Zbranak ’19 and fourth-year student Karrie Chen worked with Print Panther, an independent print production company, to create the award-winning holiday box design.
