Celebrating student leadership: Jana Krstić wins Excellence in Student Life Award

Each year, the Excellence in Student Life Award is presented to RIT students who embody the principles of engagement, scholarship, and leadership—values that reflect a deep commitment to academic success, meaningful involvement, and responsible leadership within the university community. This year, Jana Krstić, a senior in the Hospitality and Tourism Management program at RIT Croatia in Dubrovnik, was recognized with this prestigious honor.

Jana’s journey at RIT Croatia has been defined by her passion for student life and her unwavering dedication to making the campus a more inclusive and engaging place. “I’ve always been passionate about creating a fun, inclusive, and dynamic environment for students,” she shares. “Learning about this award felt like a meaningful recognition of the values I’ve tried to uphold through my work in Student Government.”

A leader, a teammate, and a student committed to growth

Jana’s leadership path began early in her academic journey. From a member of Student Government to Head of the Finance and Events Department, and ultimately serving as Vice President for the Dubrovnik campus, she has played a key role in shaping student engagement. Her efforts led to the introduction of weekly events, greater student outreach, and international representation at student leadership consortiums in Dubai and Rochester.

Balancing academic excellence with active involvement is no small feat, but Jana’s consistent GPA above 3.4 stands as a testament to her dedication. “Strong organization is key—even if it sounds cliché,” she says. “I’ve learned to use my time wisely and build a routine that supports both my studies and my extracurriculars.”

Beyond her titles and achievements, Jana emphasizes the importance of teamwork and community. “Leadership is about empowering others,” she says. “The most rewarding part has been building a team where collaboration and unity thrive.”

As she approaches graduation, Jana reflects on the defining moments of her time at RIT Croatia—moments filled with friendship, mentorship, and personal growth. Her experiences in the Hospitality and Tourism Management program helped her grow more confident and curious, preparing her to adapt and lead in professional environments.

When asked to sum up her journey in one sentence, Jana describes it as “a constant process of self-discovery, where every piece, no matter how small, teaches me something new about myself and the world around me.”

Looking ahead with gratitude and openness

Looking to the future, Jana plans to continue working with a property agency in Kotor, Montenegro—a role she’s returned to for three years. “It’s a place where I can push my boundaries and explore new ideas,” she says. She’s also keeping her options open, excited by the possibility of new experiences and growth.

For Jana, this award isn’t just a culmination—it’s a motivation to carry the values of leadership, scholarship, and engagement forward. “These aren’t just ideals—they’re guiding principles that have shaped who I am,” she reflects.

To incoming students, her message is simple but impactful: “Step out of your comfort zone. Say yes, even when it’s uncertain. That’s where the real growth happens.”
