New Media Design students break the glass ceiling at Zagreb Design Week 2024

RIT Croatia’s New Media Design students made their mark at the prominent Zagreb Design Week (ZGDW), presenting a bold exhibition under the theme of "breaking the glass ceiling." This year’s ZGDW, held from September 25-29, centered on the topic of the glass ceiling in design, offering a platform to explore the barriers that persist in creative industries.

Students from RIT Croatia’s New Media Design program, which is now in its third year, participated for the second consecutive time in the event. Their installation, titled "Bull in a China Shop," challenged outdated norms and traditions in design, reflecting Gen Z’s drive to reshape the creative world.

The concept behind "Bull in a China Shop" was designed to illustrate the disruptive nature of the current generation’s approach to the glass ceiling. While the phrase traditionally refers to barriers preventing women from advancing in the workplace, it has evolved into a symbol of stagnation—used by companies to signal inclusivity without enacting meaningful change.

We are dedicated to teaching our students the importance of critical thinking, encouraging them to challenge the established norms of design and art,” explained Dr. Ante Poljičak, Area Head for the New Media Design program. “Rather than simply accepting the rules of previous generations, they are pushing boundaries, demonstrating that equality and inclusivity must be actively pursued, not merely spoken about.”

As part of Zagreb Design Week, New Media Design sophomore Nora Miškulin led a workshop titled Redirecting Creativity: Art vs. Design. The workshop explored the challenges of creativity—how to imagine something truly original in a world filled with familiar ideas. Nora engaged participants by encouraging them to break away from conventional thinking and create something that sparks curiosity. The session focused on the intersection of art and design, with a special emphasis on how artificial intelligence is shaping both fields

Zagreb Design Week continues to be a dynamic space for fostering creative expression, and RIT Croatia’s New Media Design students are playing a key role in shaping the future of art and design. This year’s contribution further solidifies the program’s reputation as a breeding ground for innovative and socially conscious designers.

By participating in exhibitions such as ZGDW, RIT Croatia continues its tradition of providing students with opportunities to apply their knowledge and creativity to real-world challenges, underscoring the university’s commitment to delivering an American education that prepares students for global impact.
