During a ceremony on campus Oct. 5, entrepreneur E. Philip Saunders, owner of Saunders Management Co. and founder of TravelCenters of America Inc., committed $5 million to RITâs business college bearing his name to expand facilities, enhance technologies, create endowed professorships and offer graduate fellowships. He challenged all Saunders alumni and friends to raise an additional $15 million to support the collegeâs plans. -

RITâs Community Service Center and Women & Gender Center organize volunteer projects on various Friday afternoons. The volunteer projects focus on the needs of women and children in the Rochester community. A total of 12 students helped set-up for the annual Ronald McDonald House charity sale of household goods, collectibles and antiques on Oct. 1. Sorting and arranging coats are, from left, RIT students Kaiyue Wang and Emily Mazur. This yearâs sale runs Oct. 14-16 at the former Dickâs Sporting Goods store in Henrietta. -

The sisters of RITâs Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and Yoplait yogurt kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month by sponsoring a yogurt-eating competition Oct. 1. For every Yoplait yogurt lid collected, Yoplait donates a portion of the proceeds to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. -

Students in RITâs Ph.D. program in sustainability conduct solar cell research in the NanoPower Research Laboratory on campus. RIT received a $13.1 million grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology to construct a facility to house the universityâs Golisano Institute for Sustainability, which features cutting-edge research and education programs in sustainable development and design. -

The RIT community celebrated the addition of Global Village, a $57 million residential and retail complex, on Sept. 30. The unique area features restaurants, a beach volleyball court, full-service salon, post office, bank and 414 beds for student housing. Global Village adds another dimension to RITâs international and study abroad focus. -

RIT will celebrate the official opening of Global Village at 3 p.m. Sept. 30 at the complex situated between Crossroads and the University Services Center. The grand opening program will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, entertainment and tours of the complex. -

Computer Science Professor Reynold Bailey recently won a five-year $550,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to continue his work on gaze manipulation techniques. The 15th annual Mud Tug took place Sept. 25 in the field behind Grace Watson Hall. Mud Tug, sponsored by RITâs Phi Kappa Psi and Zeta Tau Alpha Greek organizations, is an annual tug-of-war event between teams of 10 competing in all-male, all-female and co-ed brackets, taking place in a huge mud pit. All of the proceeds from this yearâs event will be donated to Hillside Family of Agencies.
