RIT Tigers roared for reading at John Williams School No. 5 on Nov. 6. More than 55 student athletes, coaches, administrators and RIT Wallace Center staff members promoted literacy at the second “Giant Read.” Volunteers, including Adam Wallander, a second-year illustration student on the RIT Men’s wrestling team, read the book Amazing Tigers to all the first-graders. Each child received a copy to keep.

Drive and commitment are what motivates scholar/athlete Sharon Dennis to excel in the classroom and on the basketball court. Dennis is a student in RIT’s physician assistant program and one of two captains for RIT’s women’s basketball team.

Dave Mullaney, student government representative, first proposed the idea of changing RIT academic facilities from “building” to “hall” as part of the Campus Building Identity Committee. That change will be implemented as part of a broader strategy being rolled out this year.

The School for American Crafts Faculty Exhibition is on view through Nov. 14 in Bevier Gallery, James E. Booth Building, part of the school’s 60th year celebration. In addition, Alan Cameros, a member of the RIT Institute of Fellows, crafts collector, researcher and former National Museum Trustee Chairman, will speak on “The History of SAC” from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 5 in RIT’s Center for Student Innovation.

RIT’s Habitat for Humanity student organization is working with Flower City Habitat for Humanity building a sustainable home for a Rochester resident in need. Volunteers from RIT and the Rochester community expect construction to be completed in February.

Visitors to the fourth floor of the Eastman Building will see new colors and an improved look leading into the School of Hospitality and Service Management. Renovations were completed this fall to provide a more welcoming feel to the space that includes Henry’s Restaurant, classrooms and offices for students, faculty and staff. The area includes more gathering space for students, a greeting and service area and more focus on the Wall of Fame, photographs and memorabilia of the department’s distinguished alumni and supporters.

Medical artifacts are on display in the atrium of the Center for Bioscience Education and Technology building at RIT. The artifacts are from Rochester General Hospital’s Museum and Archives department. The display is an initiative as part of the strategic alliance between RIT and Rochester General Health System.

Virgil Smith, vice president of talent management at Gannett Co. Inc, presented “Finding News Media Jobs When the Future of Media is Unknown” to students Oct. 27. The talk was part of the Paul and Louise Miller Lecture Series. Smith began his newspaper career at The Sacramento Bee in 1971 and was appointed to his current position in 2006.

Tom Malinowski, Washington advocacy director for Human Rights Watch and an expert in United States foreign policy, was the keynote speaker for Campus Week of Dialogue Oct. 26. Before joining Human Rights Watch, Malinowski was special assistant to President Bill Clinton and senior director for foreign policy speech writing at the National Security Council. Malinowski holds degrees in political science from the University of California, Berkeley and Oxford University.

Biking enthusiasts from around Greater Rochester embarked on the first Greenway GreenRide Oct. 24. The five-mile bike trip was designed to promote biking as an environmentally-friendly method of transportation. The ride began at downtown Rochester’s Rundel Libary and ended at RIT’s Center for Student Innovation. Here, Joe Pow, associate director of the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science, leads an RIT group.

Faculty, staff and students helped to turn up the volume on RIT’s annual fund raising effort during ROAR Day, the fourth annual Raise Our Annual Responses initiative, on Oct. 21. Gifts made during ROAR Day help support RIT’s General Scholarship Fund.

Dr. Glenn Steele Jr., CEO of Geisinger Health System, was a featured speaker Oct. 22 in the joint health care seminar series, “Innovations in Health Care Delivery and Design.” Steele’s presentation is part of the strategic alliance between RIT and Rochester General Health System. He spoke about “ProvenCare—A Model for Managed Care 3.0” before invited health and business leaders from the Rochester-area community.
