RIT/NTID alumnus Sean Forbes, co-founder of the Deaf Performing Arts Network (D-PAN), gave a performance on Sept. 17 in RIT’s Webb Auditorium. The event was sponsored by the NTID Student Congress and Barnes & Noble @RIT.

Jose Guzman, a fifth-year computer engineering major in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering, is making his mark on campus in a variety of areas that include academics, athletics and organizational leadership. It’s common to find him inside the Gordon Field House and Activities Center or Student Life Center serving as a student employee supporting recreational activities and special events.

Students, faculty and staff attended a mini photo trade show Sept. 16 at The Digital Den, RIT’s electronics store. Vendors included Bogen, Leica, Dynalite, Nikon, Canon and others.

Kimberly (Manser) Kolb ’08 (microelectronic engineering) recently won a two-year fellowship from defense company BAE Systems to pursue a master’s degree in imaging science at RIT’s Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science. She will focus her work in the application and design of imaging detectors in RIT’s Rochester Imaging Detector Laboratory under director Don Figer.

Representatives of Kanazawa Technical College, Mamoru Mukai, associate director, Essential English Center (far left), and Dr. and Mrs. Hirofumi Yamada (the president and his wife), met with Harvey Palmer, dean of the Kate Gleason College of Engineering as part of a daylong visit that included a meeting with RIT President Bill Destler and members of the Office of Cooperative Education and Career Services. The visit marked the culmination of several months’ work by members of the group to recruit and hire several RIT engineering alumni to teach courses at the college in Japan.

The New York Artist Guild Fine Art Exhibition 2009 is on display through Oct. 4 in the RIT/NTID Dyer Arts Center. An artists reception is 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 12, with music by Chet Catallo.

Greek organizations Alpha Epsilon Pi and Alpha Sigma Alpha set up a large teeter-totter outside the Student Alumni Union for the week of Sept. 7 to help raise money for the Special Olympics.

Students crowd the quarter mile Sept. 9 en route to their first week of classes.

The RIT Community Garden is a grassroots project initiated by a group of RIT employees and students to cultivate a garden on campus. The group shares a garden plan, plants and maintenance. The harvest will be divided by garden members and distributed to participants, RIT Food Services and Rochester community food banks.

RIT’s Farmers Market opened Sept. 3 in E Lot (next to the Bausch & Lomb Center). Aiming to promote healthy lifestyles and eating habits among RIT students and staff, the market is sponsored by the university’s Better Me/Employee Wellness Committee. The market will be held 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Thursdays through Oct. 8.

President Destler addressed the RIT community Sept. 3 to kick off the 2009-2010 academic year.

As part of RIT’s new-student orientation, members of the University Studies program enjoy an opportunity to design their own tie-dye T-shirts. Formerly known as the RIT Exploration Program, University Studies works closely with faculty, staff and professional advisers to provide a supportive environment for both undeclared students and internal transfers.
