RIT hosted the National Press Photographers Association’s Northern Short Course, the premier conference in photojournalism, March 13-15. Ken Spencer, a photographer for Newsday and a RIT alumnus, led a studio lighting workshop using lights and a model bust. RIT and the Democrat and Chronicle were two of the sponsors of the 2008 Northern Short Course.

RIT Food Service began offering bioplastic cups and other compostable plates and food containers in the Ritz Sport Zone on March 10. This is a pilot program in the Ritz only.

The fourth annual Finger Lakes Regional FIRST Robotics Competition took place March 7 and 8, in RIT’s Gordon Field House and Activities Center. Rochester’s Wilson Magnet High School’s team, the X-Cats, won the gold medal and will compete in the 2008 FIRST Championship in Atlanta.

Enthusiastic fans cheered for their team at the fourth annual Finger Lakes Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, March 7 and 8, in RIT’s Gordon Field House and Activities Center.

EMBA alumni from RIT’s E. Philip Saunders College of Business remained on a learning curve at the fourth annual Sharpen the Saw Day on March 6. B. Thomas Golisano, businessman and founder of Paychex, was the featured guest speaker.

RIT’s School of Mathematical Sciences hosted the Monroe County Math League All-Star Competition March 4 for the seventh consecutive year. Approximately 650 high-school students from more than 35 school districts participated. Winners advanced to higher levels throughout the day and faced each other in the closing competition. The top competitors will attend the state level competition. Here, Matt Hill, a sophomore, tied with senior James Dobler in the final Buzz contest.

Local high school students attended a Medical Sciences Career Day March 3 at RIT’s Center for Biosciences Education and Technology to explore career options in the fields of medical ultrasound, physician assistant, biotechnology and exercise science and sports medicine. The event was sponsored by the center and the College of Science. Here, some students from Greece Olympia High School try out ultrasound imaging.

Teams of college students from RIT, Northeastern University, Syracuse University, Norwich University, Polytechnic University and Champlain College competed against each other in a three-day cyberdefense competition starting Feb. 29. Each team simulated an IT department at a corporation and secured computer networks. Throughout the competition, a team of industry experts attempted to infiltrate each team’s computer networks. RIT’s winning team will move on to national competition in April in San Antonio.

Owners and employees from dozens of wineries across the Finger Lakes take part in a discussion on improving tasting room operations. The session was part of a two-day training program in Canandaigua created by RIT and the Wine & Culinary Center. The program was created through a $100,000 grant from the New York Wine & Grape Foundation. Similar sessions will be taking place in Long Island and the Hudson Valley.

Ryan Tryt, a senior catcher on the baseball team, was RIT’s first representative on ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-American Team. Tryt balances his studies in the Saunders College of Business with his athletic responsibilities, which often include 6 am workouts. Above, Tryt lifts weights following morning practice.
