Using giant slingshots, catapults and other launchers, more than 100 students in teams of five tried hitting a target from 300 feet away during the second annual Pumpkin-Chuckinâ contest on Oct. 11. The contest was organized by the College of Applied Science and Technology. -

Dean Kamen, world-famous inventor of the Segway Human Transporter and founder of FIRST robotics competitions for high school students, announces at RIT on Oct. 11 the formation of Rochester FIRST, a partnership between RIT, Bausch & Lomb and Xerox that is bringing a regional FIRST robotics competition to Rochester in spring 2005. The event will draw thousands of people to the area. -

Nearly 400 volunteers braved light rain and chilly temperatures to help RIT faculty members perform the 20th Big Shot, Oct. 9. This year's "painting with light" photo project focused on the Royal Palace in Stockholm, Sweden. It's the first time that Big Shot has been conducted outside the United States. -

RIT Vice President Emeritus Alfred Davis showcased his knowledge of RIT and its history in a talk to the community, Sept. 17, discussing RIT's early history and those who helped make the university a reality. In his time at RIT, Davis served four of RIT's presidents and is a graduate of RIT's Class of 1941. The presentation was sponsored by the Nathaniel Rochester Society. -
