Job Description:
DUTIES:
1) Provides crisis intervention, problem solving, short-term counseling to
Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of
Hearing (DDBHH) victims of violent crimes, either in the office or at
agreed-upon locations in the
community.
2) Refers victims to appropriate community resources for services such as
emergency shelter, long-term
counseling and housing assistance, and provides on-going support through case
management.
3) Ensures communication access and support to all related services including
medical services and to
police and court proceedings, usually using sign language interpreters.
4) Advocates on behalf of victim to ensure his/her rights and interests are
protected within the criminal
justice system and in interaction with other service providers.
5) Assists victims to apply for compensation to which they may be entitled.
6) Educates victims about their rights and responsibilities in order to
encourage self-advocacy. When
necessary, accompanies victims to court, meetings with police, lawyers and
other service providers
7) Develops flyers/brochures and other written materials about the Victim
Assistance Program and victims’
rights.
8) Arranges and/or develops and presents educational programs and exhibits
about the Victim Assistance
Program to DDBHH individuals, service providers, police departments, etc.
9) Implements data collection procedures to document crimes against DDBHH
individuals.
10) Responsible for reporting according to state and private funding and
assists with grant and contract
writing as needed.
11) Performs other related duties as assigned.



Requirements:
Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in social work, psychology, criminal justice,
counseling or a
related field and 1 year of direct service work experience in the Deaf
community with a strong knowledge of
community resources. Fluency in American Sign Language, prefer ASL as a first
language, and knowledge of Deaf
culture. Must own and maintain an operating vehicle, have a valid driver’s
license and be eligible to be an
agency approved driver. Fluency in American Sign Language, knowledge of Deaf
culture required.
