Job Description

Student Support

Serves as a role model for the residence hall and community in supporting, coordinating and advocating for a deep commitment to the development and success of students, individually and as a community, outside of academic learning.

Serves as an advocate for students to ensure that they have the necessary resources to succeed; refers students to appropriate resources to assist them; and clarifies the Code of Conduct and other University policies as necessary.

Establishes and maintains communication with students living in the residence halls and apartments through individual outreach and community meetings; serves as a mediator/facilitator in conflict resolution when necessary and provides resolutions for interpersonal conflicts between students; and shapes an environment conducive to academic and personal development.

Maintains as a strong advocate in student retention and advancement at Gallaudet including working closely with academic and student service support units in support of university-wide recruitment and retention efforts for both new and continuing students.

Maintains high retention rate of upper-class, graduate, and ELI students; provides them with necessary resources to succeed.

Participates as a member of Residence Hall Council and works closely with student governance organizations; meets with student representatives; and carries out issues and concerns with goals of improving on-campus experience for the students.

Manages a paraprofessional program as assigned; recruits, selects, and hires new applicants; plans and implements training to paraprofessional staff; and provides leadership throughout the year.

Residence Hall Operations and Administration

Maintains office hours, responds promptly to written and oral communications, and maintains correspondence through various methods.

Conducts and attends meetings with hall staff, colleagues, and other offices as required.

Coordinates and oversees all administrative procedures to ensure effective opening and closing of the residence halls at appropriate times throughout the academic year.

Complies with Family Education Rights of Privacy Act (FERPA); maintains confidential student and university records; and manages and supervises the front desk area of the residence hall including coordination of shared information with the hall staff and residents.

Serves as facility manager of residence halls; maintains the residence hall by promptly and accurately preparing all necessary reports, records, and requests; refers any unsatisfactory maintenance, custodial, or health conditions as appropriate; and coordinates and follows through on all records pertaining to the overall maintenance of the facility including the process of maintenance work orders, assessment of damages, control of keys, and recommendation of general and long-range building improvements.

Student Programs and Activities

Supports the development and coordination of programming and activities that creates a positive environment for student development and growth complementary to the academic experience and that creates a sense of belonging for everyone, honoring the diversity of our students, their identities, and life experiences; and remains abreast of issues and trends in higher education and student programs and services.

Builds integrated and diverse teams that effectively serve our students and promote the values of bilingualism, equity, diversity and learning by all staff and students.

Assists in the development of various publication materials needed to ensure high quality administrative work and customer service in the residence halls.

Recruits, selects and trains student workers; participates in interview committees and the hiring process; develops and implements training and development programs for student staff; and provides leadership to paraprofessional staff in setting goals for the year. 

Student Conduct Team

Collaborates with the Residence Hall Conduct Coordinator to support and follow up with students of concern and conducts informal resolution conferences with students involved in alleged violations as needed.

Serves as a Residence Hall representative for students referred for student disciplinary.

Interprets University and Residence Hall rules, regulations, and policies as needed.

Assists and supports residents in their growth and identity through providing support, mediation, crisis intervention and follow-up through a culturally competent lens.

Community Support

Serves in a designated on-call rotation during the year including holidays and summer.

Responds to and follow-up on emergency and management situations as needed; and provides short-term developmental and crisis-oriented counseling/advising and identifies students in need of additional services and refers them to appropriate offices.

Represents the Residence Life and Housing office and the Office of Student Affairs on various departmental committees, participates fully in the professional activities and/or assignments and develops a cooperative relationship with other student service offices.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusive Excellence

Maintains knowledge and educates self in areas of equity, diversity, inclusion, sustainability and environmental justice.

Demonstrates an on-going commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social justice by addressing the needs and concerns of underrepresented students.

Creates an inclusive community in the residence hall through educating and challenging the Residence Hall team, individual conversations with staff/students and personal development in these core areas.

Integrates the need for understanding deaf and hard of hearing students from diverse cultures and backgrounds throughout all programs.

Additional Responsibilities

Shows a genuine commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace; and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.

Serves as a mandatory Title IX reporter; and takes annual Title IX training as part of the compliance effort. 

Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors. 

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Minimum Qualifications (When the candidate’s resume meets these qualifications, it will be screened in:

Bachelor’s degree.

A minimum of two years of residence life experience and/or working directly with college students (college student work/internship experience will be considered).

Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.

Preferred Qualifications (While not required, it is an advantage for what the position needs.):

Three years of professional experience in residence life and/or working directly with college students.

Experience with assessment and running analytics.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Qualities that will help the incumbent be more successful in the position.):

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures consistently.

Ability to operate a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point) and Google Drive.

Ability to apply student development practice and theory to residence hall programming involving deaf and hard-of-hearing students in the higher education level.

Ability to diffuse and respond professionally to stressful situations and difficult people.

Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.

Strong organizational and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.

Other Important Information

This is a two-year position and reappointment is contingent on satisfactory performance evaluation.

This is a 12-month, live-in position in an unfurnished, assigned apartment located within the hall/area of responsibility.

Although the position requires approximately 40 hours per week, the nature of the position, at times, necessitates unpredictable workweeks including nights and weekends, and some weeks requiring more than 40 hours.

The position will be required to rotate into the on-call duty system throughout the year, including during all break periods, holidays, and summer.

All employees are expected to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and will be required to submit their vaccination record prior to entering campus or by 45 days of employment, whichever is earlier.

The successful candidate will undergo a background check that must be cleared prior to working at Gallaudet University.
