The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is seeking an innovative and visionary leader to be the chief, Transplantation Branch (TB), Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Transplantation (DAIT), one of three extramural program divisions within NIAID. The TB chief plans and manages a broad portfolio of solicited grant initiatives, investigator-initiated grants, and contracts focused on basic, pre-clinical, and clinical research, with the aim of improving our understanding of the role the immune system plays in organ, tissue, and cell transplantation success or failure. The knowledge generated by this portfolio aims to modify the immune response to improve long-term transplant survival and to reduce the need for broadly immunosuppressive medications, which can cause significant side effects.

The TB chief has a broad range of responsibilities that include the following:
• Planning, awarding, and managing a broad extramural portfolio of solicited grant initiatives, investigator-initiated grants, and contracts that includes 1) basic, preclinical, and clinical research and 2) clinical trial networks, in the scientific area of prevention and treatment of rejection after organ, tissue, or cell transplantation
• Directing TB with scientific leadership to advance understanding of organ transplantation, leading to the prevention of organ rejection by new and improved modalities of therapy
• Exercising broad influence by developing and articulating programmatic goals and objectives in alignment with U.S. and global health priorities, including addressing needs of minority patients in organ transplantation
• Providing leadership and supervision for the strategic management of human and financial resources
• Developing and maintaining collaborations across NIH, other federal agencies, not-for-profit organizations, and industry
