The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is seeking
an innovative and visionary leader to be the chief, Transplantation Branch
(TB), Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Transplantation (DAIT), one of
three extramural program divisions within NIAID. The TB chief plans and
manages a broad portfolio of solicited grant initiatives,
investigator-initiated grants, and contracts focused on basic, pre-clinical,
and clinical research, with the aim of improving our understanding of the
role the immune system plays in organ, tissue, and cell transplantation

the immune response to improve long-term transplant survival and to reduce

significant side effects.

The TB chief has a broad range of responsibilities that include the
following:
•	Planning, awarding, and managing a broad extramural portfolio of
solicited grant initiatives, investigator-initiated grants, and contracts
that includes 1) basic, preclinical, and clinical research and 2) clinical
trial networks, in the scientific area of prevention and treatment of
rejection after organ, tissue, or cell transplantation
•	Directing TB with scientific leadership to advance understanding of organ
transplantation, leading to the prevention of organ rejection by new and
improved modalities of therapy
•	Exercising broad influence by developing and articulating programmatic
goals and objectives in alignment with U.S. and global health priorities,
including addressing needs of minority patients in organ transplantation
•	Providing leadership and supervision for the strategic management of
human and financial resources
•	Developing and maintaining collaborations across NIH, other federal
agencies, not-for-profit organizations, and industry
Qualifications
Required
Applicants must be U.S. citizens with the successful completion of an M.D. or
D.O.

Preferred
Applicants with demonstrated broad and in-depth expertise in clinical
transplantation and transplantation immunobiology with a concentration and/or
experience in the surgical or medical management of transplantation, as well
as demonstrated skills and abilities in the following areas:
•	Working both independently and collaboratively in planning, organizing,
and conducting research in the scientific areas described above, including
the design and management of clinical trials
•	Successful management of a multifaceted research program
•	Effective interactions across multiple sectors of government, industry,
and academia
•	Effective leadership and/or supervision/management
