RIT Croatia students presented their research at MIPRO 2020
October 6, 2020
Four of RIT Croatia IT/WMC students, Dora Beronić, Dino Muharemagić, Paula Pufek, and Matija Šipek, participated and presented their research papers at the 43rd International Convention on Information and Communication Technology, Electronics, and Microelectronics - MIPRO 2020, organized on September 28 - October 2, 2020, in a hybrid format in Opatija and online.
MIPRO conference (https://www.mipro.hr/) is one the oldest international scientific conferences in Croatia supported by many universities and large companies and also co-sponsored by IEEE, which indexes all published papers in respected research databases such as Web of Science Core Collection, IEEE Xplore Digital Library, and Scopus.
The research related to the new structured concurrency and the proposed Virtual Threads within JVM, previously known as Fibers, was performed by our IT/WMC students, Paula Pufek and Dora Beronić, under the mentorship of Dr. Branko Mihaljević and Aleksander Radovan. This research resulted in a research paper "Achieving Efficient Structured Concurrency through Lightweight Fibers in Java Virtual Machine" presented at the MIPRO conference, which discusses the comparison of standard OS threads and the new Virtual threads recently presented in
OpenJDK's project Loom, as well as analysis of the performance of the virtual threads in typical modern applications.
The other research related to the usage of GraalVM, a polyglot high-performance virtual machine for JVM-based and other languages, combined with a Java-tailored stacked framework named Quarkus, was performed by our IT/WMC students, Matija Šipek and Dino Muharemagić, under the mentorship of Dr. Branko Mihaljević and Aleksander Radovan. The research resulted in a research paper "Enhancing Performance of Cloud-based Software
Applications with GraalVM and Quarkus," also presented at the MIPRO conference, which explores and analyzes the performance of GraalVM with Quarkus, as well as GraalVM's creation of native images using Ahead-Of-Time (AOT) compilation and Quarkus' native deployment to Kubernetes.
Both research projects also resulted in a previous presentation of preliminary results at the Javantura v7 conference in February 2020 in Zagreb and three online presentations at the Undergrad Research Symposium at RIT in August 2020
