Students on a Field Trip to Pelješac

Environmental Science students from Dubrovnik campus took a field trip to peninsula of Pelješac on October 14&15. Led by prof. Marlena Ćukterač, 46 students had the opportunity to visit Malostonski zaljev (Bay of Mali Ston), which is a protected nature reserve situated 60 km west from Dubrovnik. Students learned about various species that inhabit the area, the quality of the sea, as well as about the impact and possibilities of sustainable development. Following this, student had a walking tour from Mali Ston to Ston where they learned about the historical importance of this area in the time of Dubrovnik Republic. The great Wall of Ston was built to protect the Republic and its greatest value - salt. Students also had the opportunity to visit the famous Solana Ston, where they learned about the process of harvesting salt from the sea in a traditional way by using just three natural ingredients: water, sun and wind. The final stop of this field trip was visiting the Winery Miloš, where students were interested in learning about making wine and building dry walls and ensuring fertile soil for the grape wine.

At the end of this field trip, students had a discussion about the sustainability of this area and preservation of natural resources of Pelješac.
