    Photojournalism students Jediah Plumley and Zoë Smith worked behind the scenes to prepare images for the Special Olympics website. Over 70 RIT photography students, alumni and faculty covered the New York State Special Olympics this past weekend. Athletes competed in alpine and cross country skiing, floor hockey, snow boarding, snowshoeing and figure skating.     Mary Golden, assistant professor of interior design and leader of the RIT Hope for Honduras project, talked with Jean Christophe Rusatira, from the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health at Johns Hopkins University. The Innovations in Global Health conference gave RIT researchers a platform to showcase their work during a poster session.

    The Innovations in Global Health conference featured keynote speaker Kathleen Sienko, associate professor of mechanical and biomedical engineering at University of Michigan. Sienko’s talk focused on design, development and evaluation of medical devices with input from the intended users.

    Students from Rochester city schools attended the Girls in STEM Fair and learned about the Hot Wheelz hybrid car. The K12 University Center helped bring hundreds of students to the Girls in STEM Fair at RIT Feb. 23. Funding from the BOSCH Foundation covered transportation and lunch for many city youth.

    Mandy Harvey, a deaf singer and musician who rose to fame on television’s “America’s Got Talent,” was at RIT Feb. 21 for a tour and visit with RIT/NTID students, and later performed a concert in Ingle Auditorium followed by a reception.

    Deaf and hearing dancers from RIT/NTID Performing Arts perform Leaves of the Poetry Tree Feb. 21-24 in Robert F. Panara Theatre. Using inspiration found in children’s stories and poetry books, this family-friendly dance production directed by Nicole Hood Cruz addresses issues and challenges that we all face, such as bullying, fear, death, racial differences, gender identity, dreams, and equality.

    Laura Discavage, third-year industrial engineering from Rochester, N.Y. and Victor Braescu, sixth-year mechanical engineering from Sacramento, CA., make fleece blankets to donate to Project Linus, an organization that provides comforting blankets to children who have had hardships or illnesses.
