Job Description Summary:
The ASL Mentor is a subject matter expert (SME) who provides high quality support to ASL and deaf culture courses and training curricula for multiple federal, state-funded, and private programs by utilizing technology, ASL pedagogy, and American Sign Language. The ASL Mentor will engage with medical professionals, first responders, and deaf and hard of hearing children, individuals, and their families. The ASL Mentor will promote the development of linguistic skills and cultural awareness to course participants. ASL Mentors will offer feedback and guidance in ASL and encourage learners to develop positive relationships with deaf and hard of hearing community members to enrich their learning experiences. Each mentoring session may run from 15 to 45 minutes depending on the curriculum within the ASL program.

Essential Functions:
-Attend training for various virtual curricula used in different ASL programs within CSD Learns
-Attend training to use the scheduling and video conferencing platform
-Be receptive to support and feedback throughout the program(s)
-Schedule sessions during their own time and within reasonable timeframes to accommodate participants after approval from the engagement platform manager
-Host, at minimum, 10 sessions a week to mentorship participants in the program, and no more than 40 sessions a week
-Prepare for sessions, be punctual, and complete post-session analyses immediately after each session with the platform participants
-Utilize multicultural and deaf pedagogical strategies and communication techniques for effective outcomes
-Communicate with the Instructional Designer for troubleshooting concerns
-Collaborate with the Digital Learning & Content Developer for post-program review after each program completion

Work Environment:
This position is moderately self-directed and requires understanding and compliance with company policies, procedures, and values. The position works in a virtual office environment utilizing their own personal equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the ASL Mentor is regularly required to interact collaboratively with the program participants and program staff and communicate via phone, videophone, text messaging or email.

To perform the essential functions of this position successfully, an individual should demonstrate or have completed the following:
-Ability to demonstrate instructional methodologies during mentoring sessions in ASL learning courses
-Ability to utilize the technical platform after training, and have a functional desktop or laptop computer with a webcam (absolutely no tablets or iPhones) and high-speed internet
-Ability to produce reports and/or conduct post-session analysis
-Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and understanding of Deaf culture
-Cleared screening by CSD, including a background check prior to work assignment
-Registration through Dripple to complete hiring paperwork

Qualifications:
-Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in ASL Education or related field from an accredited college or university; or equivalent professional experience
-Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in the educational environment or similar field
-Experience with general online training tools and technologies such as LMS, iCalender, video-conferencing tools, appointment apps or similar (PREFERRED)
-Ability to communicate proficiently using American Sign Language and have a strong cultural background
