The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest Institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking a physician with infectious disease and international clinical trials expertise for the position of global health science advisor within the Division of Clinical Research (DCR). NIAID has a unique dual mandate to conduct basic and applied research in infectious and immune-mediated diseases as well as respond rapidly to emerging and re-emerging disease threats. Global outbreaks and pandemics require NIAID to work in complex bilateral and multilateral settings with a diverse array of partners. Within NIAID, DCR plans, oversees, and manages international projects that include the design, conduct, and analysis of complex, cutting-edge clinical trials to combat emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases during health emergencies.
DCR seeks exceptional candidates for a senior scientific officer to serve as the global health science advisor - physician
The global health science advisor reports to the DCR director and serves as the key DCR and NIAID representative in global health emergencies, including the establishment and oversight of international clinical trials and multilateral and bilateral collaboration and cooperation. The global health science advisor’s key responsibilities include the following:
• Represents DCR and/or NIH in interfacing with representatives from other U.S. government agencies and governments around the world for the purpose of establishing clinical trial networks, clinical research capacity, and collaborations to establish infectious disease outbreak and preparedness measures
• Provides authoritative scientific and clinical leadership in the design and conduct of clinical trials for vaccines and therapeutics targeting emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases
• Serves as an expert on international standards of clinical trial design, human subjects protection, and good participatory practice guidance for the purpose of designing and overseeing complex clinical trials and clinical trial networks
• Creates rigorous evidence to support the safety and efficacy of therapeutics for hospitalized patients and ensures human subject safety and compliance with the rules of international and domestic ethics and human subjects protection
• Establishes and maintains critical collaborations and partnerships with national and international clinical research resources, biodefense research communities, and governmental organizations to advance development of clinical research networks and preparedness policy regarding high-consequence pathogens
• Represents DCR/NIAID in interfacing with foreign governments in the development of a vision for global clinical trials networks to fulfill preparedness goals and enable NIAID interests in advancing medical countermeasures
Qualifications
Required
Applicants must successfully complete the requirements for a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or M.D. Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and have an active, current, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Preferred
• Board certification in infectious diseases
• Demonstrated implementation and management of a complex, multifaceted clinical research program portfolio that addresses high-priority pathogens
• Experience in the development of independent research capacity in low- to middle-income countries and communication of complex research concepts to research naïve populations in resource poor areas
• Expertise and experience in research ethics
• Extensive experience interfacing with senior scientific and clinical representatives of international partners and stakeholders
• Leadership skill demonstrating effective interactions across multiple sectors of government, industry, and academia.
• Demonstrated evidence of successful design, conduct, and oversight of complex international clinical trials evaluating therapeutics and vaccines targeting infectious diseases of global concern.
