The Deaf Advocate/Sign Language Program Manager is responsible for representing Avodah to the Deaf community. He/she will communicate the policies and issues that affect the Deaf community on a local, statewide, and national level. The Deaf Advocate will serve as the point person at Avodah for system changes that affect the Deaf community.
• Fluent in ASL
• Familiarity with medical sign language resources
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point), and Adobe Acrobat
• Outstanding organizational, project management and time management skills with ability to meet deadlines
• Successfully manage multiple tasks and projects at one time
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive work relationships with others
• Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision
• Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills
• Creativity and comfort in dealing with a wide range of diverse individuals and situations
• Strong English writing skills and ability to effectively communicate via email
• Excellent leadership skills, ability to think creatively
• Ability to work a flexible schedule
• Skills associated with providing video captions or similar abilities to build accessibility to sign language
• Minimum Bachelor's degree in Linguistics, Communications preferred - life experience may be substituted for education relates to Medical Translation and Interpretation Services
• Three or more years of documented experience in translation from written English to ASL
• Worked with or has experience working with a medical sign interpreter
• Experience in a combined hearing/Deaf work or educational environment preferred
• Knowledge of relevant issues and laws protecting the rights of Deaf individuals
• Fluent in ASL, English and Deaf communication equipment
• Experience and cultural competence working in the Deaf community at large
• Experience promoting and advocating for the full integration of individuals with disabilities including the Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf-blind communities
